Mission Statement
"The San Diego Senior Women's Softball Association (SDSWSA) is a local, non-profit organization committed to encouraging all women, age 50 and over, to develop friendships and maintain and improve softball skills in a fun and competitive program."
The idea for a Senior Women's Softball League started in the fall of 2000. Approximately 20 senior women came together to form a team in order to enter the Senior Olympics in September of that year. Our won/loss record was not encouraging, but we had a wonderful time meeting and playing against other teams from California, Nevada, and Arizona. However, you need more than 20 ladies to form a league. So, by advertising and word of mouth we finally had enough women to form 4 teams and the league began it's inaugural season in March of 2003. We have now grown to 8 teams and play four games every Saturday at Presidio Field in Old Town.
It is interesting to note how many women have called in response to our advertisement. Many wonder if they could still play, since they haven't been exposed to the game since high school or college. They enjoyed the game in those early years, but doubt they have the ability to play after all "those years". Well, we may not be able to run as fast, catch as well, hit as hard, or throw as far as we did in those good old days, but we manage to have fun and surprise ourselves on how fast the skills return. Undoubtedly the most rewarding aspect of the League is the camaraderie and friendships that have been formed which make Saturday a day of fun and relaxation.
If you are interested, come down and watch, join us for a practice, or just start playing!
